// What Temperament Can Tell Us About Language Development of Late-Talking Toddlers
// This study compared temperamental traits in 21 typically developing and 21 late-talking toddlers (18–35 months) and examined temperament–language relations using caregiver questionnaires (ECBQ-VSF, CDI) and direct Mullen assessments. Groups showed no differences on broad temperament constructs, though late talkers had lower sensory discomfort and positive anticipation; moreover, typical toddlers' larger vocabularies were linked to more positive affect and sociability, while late talkers' larger vocabularies were linked to greater attention and inhibitory control and their better receptive language to more negative emotion. Overall, temperament differences were subtle but the different patterns of temperament–language associations imply distinct ways temperament interacts with language development in late talkers.
