// Comparing Emotional Facial Expressions Produced During Personal Narrative Discourse by People With and Without Aphasia
// This study tested whether people with aphasia (PWA) differ from controls in the frequency and intensity of emotional facial expressions during personal narratives and whether these measures relate to aphasia severity. Researchers analyzed two narrative videos each from 26 PWA and 26 controls from AphasiaBank, coding valence and intensity (1–4) with a modified Facial Expression Coding System and using linear mixed-effects models and correlations. Results showed women produced more positive expressions per minute, PWA produced less intense positive expressions than controls, and aphasia severity was not significantly correlated with expression frequency or intensity. The authors suggest reduced expression intensity in PWA may reflect attention allocated to language production or left-hemisphere damage and recommend replication with tasks designed to elicit emotion.
