// Characterizing the Speech Breathing Kinematics of Older Adults With Presbyphonia
// This study tested whether older adults with presbyphonia show different speech-breathing patterns than typical peers. Thirty-five adults (mean age 79.8) completed reading and monologue tasks in quiet and noise while inductive plethysmography and calibrated acoustics measured lung-volume and flow (primary outcome: lung volume at speech initiation, %VC). Compared with published norms, participants with presbyphonia began speech at lower lung volumes, had smaller lung-volume excursions, shorter utterances, faster speech, higher expiratory but much lower inspiratory flows, and these measures partially normalized when speaking louder in noise. The authors conclude altered respiratory kinematics are part of presbyphonia and recommend assessing and treating speech breathing alongside laryngeal-focused interventions, with future studies using well-matched controls.
