// The Effect of Between-Ear Speech Perception Asymmetry on Localization, Spoken Language, and Literacy for Adolescents With Cochlear Implants

// The study tested whether between-ear speech-perception asymmetry affects localization, spoken language, and reading in 80 adolescents with early cochlear implants, using localization, unilateral speech, language and reading tests plus PCA composites and hierarchical regression. Greater between-ear asymmetry predicted poorer localization but had no effect on spoken language or reading; bilateral CI users localized better than bimodal users. Longer acoustic (bimodal) experience increased asymmetry and reduced localization, although children with better residual hearing gained localization and language benefits from early acoustic hearing. Clinically, measured asymmetry should inform device recommendations and timing of bilateral implantation.
