// Effect of Vowel Type on Aerodynamic Measures of Estimated Subglottal Pressure and Airflow

// This study tested whether vowel choice (tongue height/advancement and vocal tract constriction) affects aerodynamic voice measures (mean airflow, MAF, and estimated subglottal pressure, Psub) and thus might change normative expectations. Forty-three healthy adults produced sustained vowels (/i/, /u/, /ɑ/) and repeated /pV/ syllables while MAF, Psub, and F0 were measured with a Phonatory Aerodynamic System. Results showed small but significant, predictable vowel effects: sustained /i/ had lower MAF than /ɑ/, and syllables with /i/ had higher Psub than those with /ɑ/, with /u/ intermediate; F0 did not predict MAF or Psub. Because effect sizes were small, measures were highly correlated, and supraglottal impedance (articulatory differences) explained the effects, vowel choice is unlikely to substantially alter normative expectations and values can be converted between vowels with little error.
