// Neural Processing of Phoneme Changes: Differences Between Children and Adults
// This study compared neural responses to a vowel-based phoneme change (/da/ → /di/) in 5–6-year-old Chinese-English bilinguals versus adults using a passive oddball ERP task (MMN and P3a). Both groups showed MMN and P3a to the deviant, but children had reduced MMN (smaller mean amplitudes, later peaks) and a larger, delayed P3a (higher mean and peak amplitudes, later latency). Children also produced a pronounced late positive mismatch response that adults did not show. These results indicate ongoing maturation of early auditory change detection and involuntary attention orienting during phoneme processing.
