// Associations Between Types of Imitation and Receptive and Expressive Language Skills in Preschoolers With Autism

// This cross-sectional study of 176 autistic preschoolers (ages 2–6) tested how different imitation types relate to receptive and expressive language while controlling for nonverbal IQ, using structured tasks for elicited (object, gestural, verbal), spontaneous object, and deferred object imitation. Models including elicited object, elicited verbal, and spontaneous object imitation explained the most variance in receptive language (with a comparable model using gestural, deferred, and spontaneous object imitation). Elicited verbal, deferred, and spontaneous object imitation were the strongest contributors to expressive language. Subgroup analyses showed immediate and deferred object imitation predicted language in minimally speaking/some words children but were less predictive in more fluent children, indicating immediate verbal and object imitation as key, level-specific intervention targets.
