// This study examined whether visual analog scale (VAS) ratings track orthographic transcription intelligibility for read and spontaneous speech in speakers with Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and healthy controls. Forty-four speakers produced read and monologue samples mixed with multitalker babble; 131 naïve listeners were randomly assigned to orthographic transcription (n=66) or VAS rating (n=65), and data were analyzed with linear regression and mixed-effects models. Strong positive relationships were found between transcription and VAS for read (R2=.75) and monologue (R2=.72), consistent across groups (R2=.52–.76), with read speech about 4.3 percentage points more intelligible. The authors conclude that VAS is an efficient alternative to transcription across tasks and clinical groups, though it omits qualitative error detail and may require more listeners; further work should test more severe dysarthria and clinical change thresholds.
