// The study tested whether executive function (EF) and task structure explain age-related differences in speech by analyzing spontaneous narratives from 272 adults (ages 20–81) collected in two tasks (an unstructured open prompt and a structured picture-book description) alongside an EF battery. Older adults produced more repetitions, revisions, and unfilled pauses but fewer filled pauses, and the open-ended task elicited more disfluencies and higher lexical diversity despite shorter samples. Although EF declined with age, it showed minimal association with disfluencies after correction, so age and task demands—rather than EF—best explain the differences in speech production.
