// The Differential Impact of Sleep-Dependent Consolidation in Speech Perceptual Learning: A Systematic Review

// This systematic review aimed to clarify how sleep consolidates speech-sound learning by qualitatively synthesizing 30 empirical studies (1,646 participants) following PRISMA guidelines. Sleep reliably stabilizes fragile speech-sound traces against wake-dependent decay, whereas enhancement and generalization appear only conditionally. Enhancement was mainly modulated by learner aptitude and generalization required sufficient training variability; null results were linked to poor encoding fidelity or high computational demands, implying resource-limited consolidation. The authors conclude sleep acts as a selective filter that prioritizes stabilization of weakly encoded traces and allows reorganization only for well-encoded representations, and they propose a hierarchical framework to explain these patterns.
