// Verbal Mediation During Shifting in School-Aged Children With Developmental Language Disorder

// This study tested whether children with developmental language disorder (DLD) rely on verbal mediation during executive shifting by comparing performance with and without articulatory suppression in 27 children aged 8–12 (15 DLD, 12 TD) using a cued local–global task. Accuracy and reaction time were analyzed for mixing (sustained task demands) and switching (trial-level shifts) costs while controlling for age and selective attention. Children with DLD were slower but similarly accurate; articulatory suppression reduced speed and accuracy for all, and mixing costs were larger for DLD at baseline but equalized under suppression. The findings suggest verbal mediation supports sustaining task goals more than trial-level switching, and weaker language reduces that benefit.
