// The study tested how well parent reports and children’s self-reports of Spanish–English proficiency and bilingual experience align, and whether alignment varies by grade. Researchers analyzed matched parent and child questionnaires from 489 bilingual children in prekindergarten through third grade (mean age 7.24). Child questionnaires had much higher response rates (93% vs 31%), parent and child measures correlated from medium to large, and grade predicted children’s self-reported proficiency (but not bilingual experience); evidence that alignment differed by grade was inconclusive. Thus, child self-report is not a replacement for parent report but is a valid, practical supplement—particularly when parent response rates are low—and offers a unique perspective on bilingual ability.
