// Developmental reorganization of functional and structural connectivity in children's language networks is consistent with interactive specialization
// The study tested Interactive Specialization in language development using a four-year longitudinal sample of children at ages 5, 7, and 9 with developmental surveys, psychoeducational tests, fMRI, and diffusion-weighted imaging. Results showed increasing functional integration and region-specific gains in network efficiency; left–right cerebral white-matter task BOLD coupling declined from ρ=0.85 at age 5 to ρ=0.21 at age 9 (z=-2.99, p=0.003). Structurally, relay-involved tracts in language networks were consistently longer than non-relay tracts (p<0.0001 at each age) and this length gap widened between ages 5 and 9, while non-language networks showed no similar change—suggesting network-specific reconfiguration toward more economical wiring. Overall the findings support Interactive Specialization, but daily activities showed no direct link to language outcomes or network efficiency and associations with standardized language measures were small and mixed.
