// Management of aerosol generating particles with a novel self-retaining intraoral suction device

// In intubation manikin simulations using electrocautery on chicken tissue, the authors compared a new self-retaining intraoral suction device (Smovac) to Yankauer, suction Bovie pencil, external smoke evacuator, suction tongue blade, and no suction, measuring aerosol particles (0.5–10 μm) and sound. Smovac produced significantly lower particle counts across all sizes, including 0.5 μm, versus Yankauer, ESE, SBP and control (all p < 0.001). Peak sound levels for all intraoral devices were lower than the external smoke evacuator and similar to each other. In this preclinical model, Smovac’s low-profile, self-retaining design provided superior aerosol mitigation while likely improving visualization and reducing reliance on assistant-held suction.
