// Caregiver-reported short-term effect and quality of life improvements after tympanostomy tube insertion in children with chronic otitis media with effusion
// This prospective randomized study of 60 children aged 1–4 with chronic otitis media with effusion assessed caregiver-reported reasons for consultation, baseline quality of life (OM-6 and two global QoL scales), and change one month after tympanostomy tube insertion (TTI). Fifty-four completed follow-up and 52 underwent TTI; sleep disturbance was the most common complaint (74%) and baseline OM-6 mean was 3.16. One month after TTI child QoL rose from 6.2 to 8.5 and family QoL from 6.7 to 8.1 (both p < 0.0005); caregivers reported improvements in sleep (58%), hearing (60%), language (72%) and 96% overall satisfaction. The authors conclude TTI gives significant short-term child and family QoL benefit, but OM-6 may underrepresent sleep-related morbidity.
