// Behavioral and Cortical Responses to Frequency Changes in Vowel-Like Stimuli in Listeners With Normal and Impaired Hearing
// The study tests a new method using the auditory change complex (ACC) to detect cortical responses to second-formant (F2) changes as an objective proxy for vowel spectral discrimination. Researchers presented vowel-like stimuli (four sinusoids matching formants of /u/ and /i/) with varying F2 step sizes while recording EEG in normal-hearing and hearing-impaired participants and compared ACCs to behavioral discrimination thresholds. Larger F2 changes produced larger ACC amplitudes, responses were reduced in hearing-impaired listeners, and ACC magnitude correlated with behavioral discrimination. These results support using the ACC with speech-like stimuli to objectively assess frequency discrimination and suggest clinical potential.
