// Musicianship enhances hearing-in-noise performance in older and younger adults: Evidence from the Music-in-Noise Task
// We tested whether musical experience improves hearing-in-noise (HIN) in aging by comparing 94 younger (mean 23.6) and 90 older adults (mean 69.6) with similar hearing using the Music-in-Noise Task (MINT), which isolates predictive cues, audiovisual integration, and temporal processing. Younger adults outperformed older adults on MINT conditions that provided additional cues but not on the baseline condition. Musical experience predicted better MINT performance across both age groups, and earlier age of music acquisition correlated with higher performance. The results suggest musical training strengthens top-down cognitive mechanisms that support HIN and could help preserve auditory perception and social engagement across the lifespan.
