// Increased listening effort and decreased speech perception at high presentation sound levels in older hearing-impaired adult listeners

// We tested word identification across multiple sound levels in quiet and noise in younger (≤25) and older (>50) listeners with normal hearing or mild-to-moderate hearing loss, and used pupillometry to measure listening effort. Behavioral results showed "rollover" (worse speech perception at higher levels) for both temporal and non-temporal contrasts, particularly in older normal-hearing and older hearing-impaired listeners when speech was in background noise. Pupillometry revealed that listening effort increased with sound level mainly in noise and was amplified by age and hearing loss, with the largest effect in older listeners with hearing loss. These findings imply that amplifying high sound levels can harm speech perception and increase effort in older/hearing-impaired listeners, affecting treatment strategies for age-related hearing loss.
