// This study developed and evaluated the NAL‑NL3 Comfort in Noise Module, an algorithm that determines hearing‑aid gain by imposing a limit on total loudness, tested via iterative lab studies, perceptual modelling and real‑world smartphone EMA with 83 adult hearing‑aid users. The module selectively reduced prescribed gain relative to standard NAL‑NL3 and progressive refinements produced increasing user preference for listening comfort in noise. Laboratory testing found no significant loss of speech understanding, indicating that lowering gain in noisy settings improves comfort without materially degrading speech perception and supporting NAL‑NL3’s use of specialised targets.
