// Perceived Naturalness and Acoustic Characteristics of Habitual Versus Clear Speech for Individuals With Hearing Loss

// This study tested whether clear speech and a brief (30‑min) clear‑speech training change perceived naturalness and which acoustic features predict it. Twelve female talkers produced habitual speech (HS), untrained clear speech (UCS), and trained clear speech (TCS); 28 listeners rated naturalness and speech rate, number of pauses, and pause duration were measured and analyzed with linear mixed‑effects models. HS was rated most natural and was fastest, while TCS was least natural, much slower, and had more/longer pauses; speech rate strongly predicted lower naturalness and pauses also contributed. Thus, 30‑min clear‑speech training reduced naturalness, showing an intelligibility–naturalness trade‑off and suggesting training should avoid excessive slowing or prosodic disruption or include real‑time feedback on naturalness and intelligibility.
