// Neural Correlates of the Acceptable Noise Level and Self-Reported Listening Skills in Young Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder
// This study tested whether auditory sensory gating relates to noise acceptance and self-reported listening in 12 listeners with ASD and 12 neurotypical controls by recording passive EEG responses to pure tones (P1/P2 gating) and measuring acceptable noise level (ANL) and SSQ scores. Behaviorally, the ASD group accepted less background noise, had higher most-comfortable speech levels, and reported worse listening abilities on the SSQ. Across groups, weaker pre-attentive P1 gating predicted poorer noise acceptance (higher ANLs). Weaker later-stage P2 cortical inhibition was linked to greater self-reported listening deficits on the SSQ only in the ASD group, suggesting early sensory filtering affects noise tolerance generally while later cortical inhibition relates to subjective listening problems in ASD.
