// Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on pediatric deep neck space infections: Post-pandemic insights from a multi-institutional analysis
// We retrospectively analyzed 5,334 children (0–18 years) with parapharyngeal or retropharyngeal abscesses using the PHIS database from 2018–2023 to compare pre-pandemic, pandemic, and post-pandemic trends. Case volumes fell during the pandemic then rebounded post-pandemic to exceed pre-pandemic levels; contrast neck CT use increased post-pandemic, surgical rates stayed stable, antibiotics were nearly universal (longer courses during the pandemic), and length of stay and hospital charges peaked during the pandemic while 30‑day readmissions were unchanged. These findings indicate COVID-19 public health measures were associated with a temporary reduction in pediatric DNSI incidence and modestly increased healthcare utilization, followed by a post-pandemic rebound.
