// Evidence for Relationship Between Speech Perception in Noise and Spectrotemporal Modulation Processing in Children With Mild Bilateral Hearing Loss: A Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Study
// This study tested whether suprathreshold neural processing of temporal and spectral cues predicts speech‑in‑noise perception and is altered by hearing aids in children with mild bilateral hearing loss (CHL). Using a spatial release‑from‑masking speech task (SNR for 70% accuracy) and fNIRS of bilateral frontotemporal cortex responses to amplitude‑ and spectral‑modulated noise, the authors compared 11 CHL (unaided and aided) with 28 age‑matched normal‑hearing children. Behaviorally, CHL and controls showed similar benefit from spatial separation and aiding did not change that benefit, but fNIRS showed increased temporal‑ and spectral‑modulation responses in the temporal cortex of aided CHL versus unaided CHL and controls. Those cortical changes correlated with better speech‑in‑noise performance in CHL, suggesting hearing aids enhance suprathreshold neural sensitivity to speech cues even when behavioral gains are subtle.
