// This study compared socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of ASL‑communicating cochlear implant (CI) recipients with the broader CI population. Using Epic Cosmos data on 39,111 CI patients from 2015–2024 (1,070 [2.7%] preferring ASL), researchers used chi-square, t-tests, and multivariate analyses to assess associations including explantation. ASL users were more likely to be female, Hispanic, urban-dwelling, and in the highest socioeconomic/social vulnerability groups and had higher odds of explantation (multivariate OR for ASL = 2.55). The results indicate Deaf identity correlates with distinct socioeconomic profiles and increased explantation risk, highlighting the need for culturally informed care.
