// Eye Tracking in Visuoperceptual Diagnostic Tasks in Health Care: A Scoping Review and Thematic Synthesis With Implications for Speech-Language Pathology
// This scoping review mapped research on clinicians' gaze during diagnostic interpretation to identify methods, outcomes, and gaps relevant to speech-language pathology; following PRISMA-ScR, five databases (2000–2025) yielded 93 eligible studies. Most studies were cross-sectional and based in radiology/pathology using remote eye trackers and static 2D images; wearable devices, high sampling rates, and dynamic stimuli were uncommon, and only three studies involved SLPs. Thematic synthesis found effects on expertise development, visual search, diagnostic reasoning/performance, technological factors, and cognitive load, but also barriers of generalizability, data quality, technical limits, and cognitive/behavioral factors; overall, eye tracking reveals meaningful differences in perceptual efficiency and diagnostic accuracy, yet SLP-focused evidence is limited. Future work should use longitudinal designs, high-speed/wearable tracking, automated dynamic AOIs, real-world contexts, and standardized reporting to better inform SLP training and diagnostic performance.
