// Are Bilingual Children With Speech, Language, and Communication Needs More at Risk for Heritage Language Attrition Than Their Typically Developing Peers?
// This study compared the language environments and proficiency of 48 bilingual children (~7.9 years) with typical development (TD) versus speech, language, and communication needs (SLCNs) using a parent "Quantifying Bilingual Experience" questionnaire and an English sentence repetition task. Children with SLCNs had more lifetime and current societal-language (English) input, a less rich heritage-language (HL) environment, were less willing to use HL, and showed lower HL proficiency than TD peers; reduced HL experience was linked to weaker HL but not to stronger SL. The authors conclude bilingual children with SLCNs are at greater risk of HL attrition and reduced HL exposure does not improve societal-language development, contradicting the view that bilingualism harms SL in SLCNs.
