// When Language Access Is at Risk: Children of Parents With Deafblindness and the Role of Societal Support
// This commentary argues that children have a right to develop language that lets them communicate with a parent who has deafblindness and that societal services must ensure this right. Based on a research project grounded in the UN conventions on children’s and disability rights, the authors show in the Swedish context that the lack of a mother‑tongue syllabus for Swedish Sign Language restricts formal access and can undermine children’s rights. They conclude that family‑centered supports promoting shared tactile, social‑haptic and sign‑based communication are needed to ensure inclusion and well‑being, and propose the term “children of deafblind adults” to recognize their cultural and linguistic minority status.
