// Neural processing of speech envelopes from different languages and post-stimulation functional connectivity in newborns: an fNIRS study
// This study tested how newborns process speech envelopes and whether brief exposure changes post-stimulation brain activity. Using fNIRS, the authors recorded hemodynamic responses and resting-state data in 73 newborns (Mandarin, French, English groups) during envelope stimulation and before/after rest. All envelopes evoked frontotemporal activation, and only brief exposure to Mandarin envelopes produced increased frontotemporal functional connectivity after stimulation without changing local spontaneous amplitude. The findings suggest brief exposure yields persistent enhancement of interregional coordination, which could support early retention and maturation of language networks.
