// This study tested whether grammatical gender in Spanish is automatically activated and modulated by semantic cues (biological sex, stereotypes) using a gender-priming task with native Spanish and Italian-Spanish bilingual speakers, recording behavioral responses and ERPs (N400, P300) to nouns (biological/arbitrary, stereotyped/neutral) followed by gender-marked pronouns. A gender-congruency effect appeared for both biological and arbitrary nouns, showing grammatical gender is activated at the lexical level and automatically even without semantic cues, and stereotypical primes amplified this effect, especially in bilinguals. Spanish speakers did not treat the masculine form as inclusive, bilinguals showed cross-linguistic gender coactivation, and native speakers exhibited stronger behavioral GCEs consistent with deeper semantic engagement.
