// Altered hemispheric lateralization of speech-related cortical activity in unilateral severe hearing loss: an fMRI study

// Using fMRI during a speech perception task, the study compared activation in primary (TTG) and higher-order (STG) auditory regions in people with severe postlingual unilateral hearing loss (right- or left-sided) versus normal-hearing controls. There were no group differences in the primary auditory cortex (TTG), but STG activation was reduced in patients, especially those with right-sided hearing loss. Left-sided hearing loss showed increased leftward STG dominance, indicating ear-specific effects on hemispheric organization; overall, unilateral loss alters higher-order speech processing and supports a right‑ear advantage as a neural explanation for speech-in-noise difficulties.
