// Speech recognition of adult cochlear implant users with unilateral hearing loss: Default versus place-based mapping procedures

// This randomized study tested whether place-based mapping improves early speech recognition versus a default map in 19 adults with unilateral cochlear implants. Participants were assigned at activation to a default map (70–8500 Hz) or an individualized place-based map that aligned filter center frequencies to cochlear place; speech was measured at 1 and 6 months (words, phonemes, vowels in CI-alone; masked speech in bilateral listening). At 6 months the place-based group had better vowel recognition and better masked speech recognition when the masker was directed to the non-implanted ear; there were no group differences for CNC words, phonemes, or when the masker was co-located or toward the implanted ear. These preliminary results indicate place-based mapping can improve some speech outcomes after several months of CI use.
