// Shared Variance Across Cognitive Assessments Predicts Language Outcomes in Aphasia: A Preliminary Study
// The study examined whether common cognitive tests share variance and whether the resulting components predict aphasia severity and sentence comprehension. Seventeen adults with chronic aphasia and 21 controls completed multiple attention and cognitive batteries; principal component analysis and regressions identified six components and related them to language outcomes. Subtests tended to cluster by battery (indicating redundancy); visuospatial processing speed and auditory orienting attention predicted milder aphasia and more efficient sentence comprehension, while greater visual-sustained attention was linked to more severe aphasia. Single tasks with the highest loadings predicted sentence comprehension but not aphasia severity, suggesting assessments can be streamlined to reduce redundancy and better target rehabilitation.
