// Brain-wide mapping of neuroanatomical connections to the auditory cortex of hearing and deaf mice
// Using an intersectional genetic tracing approach, the study mapped brainwide inputs to primary auditory cortex in congenitally deaf mice and hearing littermates. Deaf mice showed significant reductions in inputs from the basomedial amygdala, the core of the medial geniculate nucleus, and anterior auditory thalamic nuclei, while inputs from other thalamic nuclei and non-auditory cortical regions were largely preserved. Thus, congenital deafness selectively alters some auditory-cortex connections but leaves many pathways intact, which may influence and inform strategies to restore hearing.
