// The study tested whether embedding visual scene displays (VSDs) into a dynamic, play-based naturalistic developmental behavioral intervention (NDBI) improves joint engagement in young autistic children. Using a randomized multiple-baseline single-case design with three participants, researchers compared NDBI alone to NDBI plus aided AAC modeling and just-in-time programming of VSDs. Introducing NDBI alone produced a large increase in child joint engagement and a large decrease in isolated attention; adding aided AAC/VSDs yielded mixed effects. Overall, the results suggest VSDs within play-based NDBIs show promise as a communication support, though further research is needed.
