// Investigating Variability and Malleability of Speech-Language Pathologists' Responsive Talk With Children: An Early-Efficacy Trial
// This study tested whether speech-language pathologists' (SLPs) use of responsive talk with preschoolers could be increased by brief clinician education or real-time tablet prompts (GENIE). In a quasi-experimental design, 11 SLPs each completed a baseline session and a second session randomized to receive either the brief education or GENIE prompts, with responsive talk coded from video. SLPs showed substantial baseline variability, and both interventions increased responsive talk—clinician education produced a very large effect (d = 2.1) while GENIE produced a moderate effect (d = 0.6). The authors conclude that SLPs' responsive talk is malleable and that brief training and in situ technological supports are promising strategies.
