// Integrating an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Literacy Feature Into Shared Storybook Reading for Autistic Children Who Need or Rely on AAC

// The study tested whether adding an adapted Transition to Literacy (T2L) initial-letter sound feature to a grid-based AAC topic display improves letter-sound identification for children with autism who need or rely on AAC. Using a multiple-baseline single-case design with six children ages 5–10 who knew two or fewer letter sounds, researchers measured accuracy before and after the feature was introduced. All participants increased accuracy and generalized gains to identifying initial letters in CVC words, suggesting the T2L feature can support letter-sound knowledge and serve as a quick, integrable supplement to explicit literacy instruction in high-tech AAC.
